The Deer
Yes, it’s true, I got the deer.
The deer is the white elephant gift that travels among our family along with several rules:
- You must display the deer in a prominent location. Mantles or bookshelves are especially nice.
- You must keep the deer for at least a year. No hot potato-ing it.
- The fake poinsettias may not be removed; even in July.
It has been a few years since the deer has graced our bookshelf. It some weird way, I’ve missed it. The poor fellow has had a rough time since I saw him last. After being stuffed into a suitcase on the way to Tennessee, both of his ears broke off. The ears have since been super-glued back on by my sister, giving this gaudy gift a bit more gauche.
