Cable crimping

When we built our house three and a half years ago, I insisted that each of the main rooms of our house have Cat5 run to them. Since the electricians pulled the cable, all they did was leave a bunch of unterminated wires in the basement. (Fortunately, I saw how they had originally pulled the cable and made them redo it – they had run it side by side with the electrical wiring. I can only imaging the crapload of interference that would have caused, not to mention the potential for crossover.)

Still, those blue cables are still hanging from the basement ceiling while my cable modem and router help the office maintain its balmy temperatures. About a year ago, I bought a crimper which sits unopened in the same corner of the basement, waiting to be used. I have a fear this will turn into a gi-normous project if I start it.

Fortunately, ^Lestat has posted his hints on crimping network cables on his blog. I can’t even say I have the excuse of not knowing how to do it anymore.

Cable crimping is a pain. I had to wire the Vorhees building at Carroll College back in the day when the Internet was newish and all that crimping took FOREVER. I learned it is best to have a color scheme and stick to it, of course.
