Bridge to Terabithia

Warning: Plot spoilers to the movie ahead!

On Sunday, we sat down to our traditional Sunday Night Supper™ – eating finger foods while watching a movie.  It’s something we adopted from my childhood.  Mom was still getting dinner ready while the boys and I were sitting on the couch watching.  The movie we chose this week was Bridge to Terabithia.  While the opening credits rolled, the scene switched between someone sketching and a boy (the main protagonist) running.

Our eldest said, "This is about a boy who draws.  And runs.  I read the book."

I chuckled. "I bet he runs and draws," I replied, pointing at the screen.

"Well, I *started* reading the book. I didn’t finish it."

Mom joined us and we watched the movie and ate.  Midway through the movie, the main girl character died in an accident.  It wasn’t an expected plot twist, so it caught all of us off guard. Our eldest couldn’t believe that she was gone and insisted every few moments that she couldn’t have died.  Mom and I kept stating "She’s dead.  She’s dead."

"I read the book," he insisted to Mom, "she isn’t really dead."

"She’s dead."

"I read the book, she didn’t die."

"She’s dead."

This continued on until the credits ran.

"Hey," I said, pointing to the screen again. "She died."

Well, he hadn’t read *all* the book.
